THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING A MARINE RADIO IS SAFETY.  ALL YOU NEED IS CHANNEL 16 FOR THIS. ALL CALLS SHOULD START ON THIS CHANNEL. IF YOU NEED HELP CALL ON 16 AND THE COAST GUARD AND ANY NEARBY BOAT WILL HEAR YOU.  THE COAST GUARD WILL ASK YOU TO GO TO THEIR WORKING CHANNEL ( THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT NUMBER) AND WILL MEET YOU THERE. IF YOU CALL A LOCK OR MARINA OR MARINE PHONE OPERATOR ON 16 THEY WILL DIRECT YOU TO THEIR CHANNEL, THE ONLY TIME YOU NEED TO KNOW A CHANNEL TO GO TO IS WHEN YOU CALL ANOTHER BOAT TO TALK, THEN YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT CHANNELS YOU ARE ALLOWED TO USE.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE PORT CALL SOMEONE TO SEE IF YOUR RADIO IS WORKING OR HAVE A TEST SET TO CHECK IT. MOST COMMON PROBLEMS ARE BAD COAX CONNECTOR AT RADIO END, POOR GROUND ON POWER LEAD, TO SMALL OF WIRE TO RADIO, OR BAD MIKE.

WE RECOMMEND A 25 WATT RADIO AND 8 FT ANTENNA. ANYTHING ELSE ( IE WALKIE TALKIE ETC.) IS A BACKUP OR SHORE RADIO FOR IN THE DINGY.
